Johan Knaap Games 2018: Good times, windy days

Written by: Pien Meijs & Nadim van Minnen

On May 2nd 2018, a few Haasjes went out to compete in the beautiful FBK Stadium at the Johan Knaap Games. While this has always been Pien's favourite competition (being so close to her home), this year it went a bit differently: her first Johan Knaap Games as a fresh Haasje did not go as she had hoped. From the first vault on it was a fight: some days everything goes right, but this was not one of them. Every time some small things went wrong, and the headwind did not help either. This resulted in a 2.90m on the pole vault. Fortunately, the good times with the other Haasjes made the day a success after all: later that night Pien ran the 4x100m together with Ilse, Sophie and Margo. In the meantime, Ilse and Sophie had competed in the long jump (4.04m and 3.74m) and the 200m (30.44s and 27.91s with headwind). Even mid-distance runner/sprinter Margo took on the 200m and finished in 30.39s. She ran the same distance 4 more times during the 800m, which resulted in 2:26,36. The 800m was also ran by Haasje Thomas, who ran a decent 2:01,56.

Because the competition was delayed, our Haasjes were worried that they could not eat ice cream after the competition! Fortunately, they found some ice cream in Pien's freezer. After the 4x100m, where the ladies were happy enough to make the baton complete the lap (they finished in 54.96s), everyone went back to Nijmegen. It was a fun competition, with mixed results. But.. you learn perhaps the most from bad results!
